Papa Haydn composed his quartet in 1797 – five years after Mozart’s death – while Mozart had written his fourth string quintet ten years earlier. At this stage, both composers were grappling with an inner tension related to their existence and lives, a tension that foreshadowed Beethoven’s musical revolution.
The ethos of Pēteris Vasks’ work can be summed up in one sentence: silence is not emptiness but the foundation of spiritual and human connection.
