THE LAUTTASAARI
MUSIC FESTIVAL

The modern string quartet was born in the mid-18th century. Since then, the ensemble of two violins, viola, and cello has inspired numerous composers to write their best insights and most intimate emotions for it. 

The Lauttasaari Music Festival is primarily built around music that is central for the string quartet. Four internationally acclaimed quartets will perform music from four centuries. The program includes the latest compositions from Finland as well as timeless pieces by Beethoven, Schubert, and Dvořák. Occasionally, the quartet will be joined by piano, vocalist, or double bass to enhance colors and drama.

As exceptions to the main theme of string quartet music, there will be a worship service based on Beethoven's compositions, and some select pieces of French and Japanese music. The  event will conclude in a grand finale called ‘The Night of Surprises’ where the creativity of the players can flourish freely.

Accompanying the music, well-known composers and authors share their thoughts about their work in contemporary times in the free events at center library Oodi.
