Franz Schubert (1797–1828): String Quartet in C major Op.163 (1828)
Carducci Quartet, and Marko Ylönen, cello
In 1772, Haydn composed six groundbreaking String Quartets, Opus 20, that revolutionized the traditional forms. Their structure, emphasizing equality among the players, served as a model for composers far into the future. Franz Schubert's String Quintet, composed just a few weeks before his death in 1828, is an incredible journey into the richness of human emotions. In the slow movement, there is a moment where the subtle shift from minor to major harmonies can make one feel as though transcending into heavenly spheres.
